Negotiating Salary: If you deserve a raise, ask for it!
One need not feel shy of asking for ore. The only point to remember when negotiating for a raise is that-do you strongly believe you deserve that raise? If you are convinced then nothing should stop you from talking to your boss.
It happens to some only and you are not part of that lucky lot. The boss suddenly calls Arthur to his cabin after a one-to-one meeting lasting about 15minutes. Arthur comes out with a huge grin on his face and is not willing to talk to any one in the team. After some cajoling, he confides that his pay cheque has been fattened by 50 percent and there is additional cream too. He is going to get a blackberry and the office will boot all the bills on it.
That surely is something that all in the team will feel proud about. But, to be honest, you are going green with envy, “How come I did not get that raise? Why did I miss out though I have worked hard as hard if not harder than Arthur?” Are these questions on your mind? You secretly plan to ask for a raise. You think you deserve a 20 per cent hike at least. You want to just barge in the manager’s cabin and tell him on his face how hard you worked on the last project.
You are all charged up, but something prevents you from going into the cabin. This is the dilemma faced often by employees across organizations. They feel they deserve more, may be they really do, but sadly they do not know how to put across the demand. Fear of reprisal, getting a negative feedback or being fired for questioning authority of the top bosses hold them back.
One need not feel shy of asking more. The only point to remember when negotiating for a raise is that-do you strongly believe you deserve that raise? If you are convinced then nothing should stop you talking to your boss. You should consult your immediately or the one who you report to, about it first. This is because it is he who has helped the management assesses your performance. He has closely watched you on work-completing tasks, meeting deadlines, performing as per team and project requirements and related issues. You have been compared and contrasted with others in the team by him along with his boss or manager. It would be a good idea to get info from him as what were the points you got a good percentage and where you slipped. He will definitely give you the whole picture because he would prove that he has been fair in assessing every individual.
Adopt this simple way to go about it. Don’t go about telling everybody around you that you deserve more than that guy X or how the organization is under cutting hard workers. It will not help. Go knock on the boss’ cabin door.
